A complete waste of money. My first hearing was in April 2023, Mr Harris confused me with another client and proceeded to tell me to shut up when I started to correct the court on my name and location. Following the hearing and being told to shut up I did not receive a phone call or an apology. I had to fill out every bit of the interrogatories I was served with. The interrogatories from my now exhusband were laughable at best. Not even half the information was filled out no statements no documentation, had Mr Harris actually taken the time to look he wouldn’t have been so surprised to find that out during the mediation. Again Mr Harris did not even remember my case much less who his client was. He didn’t even bother to draft up the final decree he let the other attorney draft it up and billed me as though it was his work. In the end the I got screwed, first by my ex husband and then by Mr Harris. If I had to guess I’d bet he didn’t even spend a whole hour personally on my case. His legal assistant would have been the better choice since it was probable her that did all of the work. Crashed and burned.

Services Offered

  • Divorce and Dissolution of Marriage: Representing clients through the entire divorce process, including contested and uncontested divorces, equitable distribution of marital assets and debts, and spousal support (alimony) negotiations or litigation.
  • Child Custody and Visitation: Assisting parents in establishing or modifying parenting plans, legal custody arrangements, and physical custody schedules, always with a focus on the best interests of the children.
  • Child Support: Calculating and establishing initial child support orders, as well as handling modifications and enforcement of existing child support orders in accordance with New Mexico guidelines.
  • Paternity Actions: Establishing legal parentage for children born outside of marriage, which is crucial for determining child support, custody, and visitation rights.
  • Adoption: Guiding individuals and families through the complex legal processes of various types of adoption, including stepparent, relative, and private adoptions.
  • Domestic Violence Restraining Orders: Providing legal assistance to clients seeking or defending against protective orders related to domestic violence, ensuring their safety and legal rights.
  • Prenuptial and Postnuptial Agreements: Drafting and reviewing agreements that define property rights and financial responsibilities for individuals before or during marriage.
  • Enforcement and Modification of Orders: Assisting clients with enforcing existing court orders (e.g., for child support or custody) or seeking modifications to orders due to significant changes in circumstances.

Given the sensitive and often emotionally charged nature of family law, clients typically seek an attorney who not only understands the legal framework but also possesses a strong ability to manage complex personal situations.

Features / Highlights

When evaluating a legal professional, especially in a sensitive area like family law, understanding their key features and highlights, including client feedback, is crucial. Don F. Harris, Esq. Family Law Attorney, as noted, focuses specifically on family law, which can be a significant highlight for clients seeking specialized expertise.

  • Specialized Focus on Family Law: By concentrating solely on family law, Mr. Harris likely possesses in-depth knowledge of New Mexico statutes, case law, and court procedures relevant to divorce, custody, and related matters. This specialization can be a distinct advantage for clients whose cases fall within this specific legal area.
  • Local Albuquerque Presence: His office in downtown Albuquerque provides a convenient and accessible location for local residents needing family law services. This local presence can facilitate easier communication and in-person meetings.
  • Direct, Factual Communication: One client review states, "Mr. Don Harris is a very knowledgeable attorney. It is very important to receive correct information from your lawyer and not what you want to hear and that is exactly what Mr. Harris provides." This highlights a feature of direct, unvarnished legal advice, which some clients value for its honesty and realism.

However, it is equally important to address other aspects highlighted in customer reviews, which present a more mixed picture of the client experience:

  • Concerns Regarding Communication and Attention to Detail: A critical review states: "My first hearing was in April 2023, Mr Harris confused me with another client and proceeded to tell me to shut up when I started to correct the court on my name and location. Following the hearing and being told to shut up I did not receive a phone call or an apology... Again Mr Harris did not even remember my case much less who his client was. He didn’t even bother to draft up the final decree he let the other attorney draft it up and billed me as though it was his work... If I had to guess I’d bet he didn’t even spend a whole hour personally on my case. His legal assistant would have been the better choice since it was probable her that did all of the work. Crashed and burned." This feedback raises significant concerns about client communication, case management, attorney-client rapport, and the level of direct attorney involvement in cases.
  • Potential for Discrepancy in Service Quality: The contrasting reviews suggest that client experiences with Mr. Harris may vary significantly. While one client appreciated direct information, another reported a severe lack of personal attention and confusion regarding their case specifics.

Potential clients should carefully consider these points and perhaps ask specific questions about case management, communication protocols, and attorney involvement during their initial consultation to ensure alignment with their expectations.

Promotions or Special Offers

In the realm of legal services, especially for specialized areas like family law, it is uncommon for attorneys to offer "promotions" or "special offers" in the same way a retail business might. Legal representation is a professional service, and fees are typically based on the attorney's expertise, time spent, and the complexity of the case.

For Don F. Harris, Esq. Family Law Attorney, as with most legal professionals, clients can expect a transparent discussion about fee structures during an initial consultation. This discussion usually covers:

  • Initial Consultation Fees: Some attorneys offer a free or reduced-rate initial consultation to discuss the client's needs and determine if the case is a good fit. Others may charge a standard fee for this first meeting.
  • Hourly Rates: Most family law cases are billed at an hourly rate, meaning clients are charged for the attorney's time spent on their case, including research, drafting documents, court appearances, and communication.
  • Retainer Agreements: Clients are often required to pay an upfront retainer fee, which is placed in a trust account and drawn upon as legal services are rendered.
  • Flat Fees: For very specific and well-defined services (e.g., drafting a simple will, uncontested divorce if very straightforward), an attorney might offer a flat fee, though this is less common in complex family law litigation.

Prospective clients should directly inquire about the fee structure relevant to their specific family law matter during their initial contact. It is essential to have a clear understanding of all potential costs, billing practices, and the expected scope of work before formally engaging legal services. Given the feedback on communication, clients may also wish to specifically ask how billing updates and progress reports are handled.

Contact Information

For New Mexico residents seeking legal assistance with family law matters, Don F. Harris, Esq. Family Law Attorney can be reached using the following contact details:

Address: 320 Gold Ave SW #1401, Albuquerque, NM 87102, USA

Phone: (505) 886-9606

Mobile Phone: +1 505-886-9606

It is advisable to call the office to schedule an initial consultation. When making contact, preparing a brief summary of your family law needs can be helpful. This will help ensure that the services provided align with your specific requirements and expectations for legal representation.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For New Mexicans navigating the often emotionally charged and legally complex landscape of family law, finding an attorney who is not only skilled but also attuned to their personal needs is paramount. Don F. Harris, Esq. focuses specifically on family law, a specialization that can be highly beneficial for local residents seeking assistance with divorce, child custody, child support, and other domestic matters. His office in downtown Albuquerque offers a convenient and accessible location for those within the city and surrounding areas, providing a local point of contact for sensitive legal issues. This local presence means familiarity with New Mexico's specific family court procedures and legal environment.

However, prospective clients should carefully consider the full spectrum of client experiences. While one review highlights Mr. Harris's ability to provide "correct information" rather than just what a client wants to hear—a quality many value in legal counsel—other feedback raises significant concerns regarding communication, attention to detail, and direct attorney involvement. These points are particularly critical in family law, where consistent updates, clear communication, and personalized attention can profoundly impact both the legal outcome and the client's emotional well-being.

Therefore, while Don F. Harris, Esq. offers specialized family law services from a central Albuquerque location, suitability for locals will largely depend on individual client priorities. Those who value direct, unvarnished advice might find his approach beneficial. However, for New Mexicans who prioritize consistent communication, meticulous case management, and a high degree of personal involvement from their attorney throughout their legal process, it would be highly advisable to conduct a thorough initial consultation. During this consultation, prospective clients should explicitly discuss their expectations regarding communication frequency, the delegation of tasks to legal assistants, and the attorney's direct engagement with their case to ensure that Mr. Harris's practice aligns with their specific needs for responsive and attentive legal representation in sensitive family matters.

My ex hired Don to represent him when he decided to ignore a court order to pay me spousal support. As it turned out my ex was again ordered to pay my spousal support and Don walked away with $10,000. Of my exs hard earned cash.
