William Gribben - I was surprised how poor communication and accountability he shows towards his clients. This is really surprising and disappointing when you see an attorney show disregards to clients in a vulnerable situation. First he would reply, then no replies, then promise to call back, then no call-back - his fellow colleagues were enabling it as well. No accountability - and my deadline has passed now. Quite sad.

Himmelstein Gribben & Joseph LLP focuses on critical areas of law that directly impact the lives and rights of individuals in New York City. Their practice is deeply rooted in advocacy and justice.
Tenant Rights / Landlord-Tenant Law: This is a cornerstone of their practice. They represent tenants in disputes with landlords, covering issues such as:
Eviction Defense: Fighting unjust evictions and ensuring tenants' rights are protected.
Rent Overcharges: Assisting tenants who have been charged illegally high rents, particularly in rent-stabilized or rent-controlled apartments.
Habitability Issues: Addressing landlord failures to provide essential services like heat, hot water, or repairs, as highlighted by a client's experience with a landlord cutting corners on heat.
Lease Termination: Guiding tenants through the process of legally terminating a lease, especially when living conditions are untenable or lease terms are violated by the landlord.
Housing Discrimination: Fighting against discrimination based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other protected characteristics in housing.
Civil Rights Litigation: The firm champions civil rights, representing individuals whose fundamental rights have been violated. This includes:
Police Misconduct: Advocating for victims of police brutality, false arrest, illegal search and seizure, and other abuses of power by law enforcement.
First Amendment Rights: Protecting freedom of speech, assembly, and other constitutional liberties.
Due Process Violations: Ensuring individuals receive fair treatment under the law.
Employment Law: Representing employees in disputes with employers. While specific examples are not provided, this typically includes:
Workplace Discrimination: Addressing discrimination based on protected characteristics.
Wrongful Termination: Assisting employees who have been unjustly fired.
Wage and Hour Disputes: Recovering unpaid wages, overtime, or challenging illegal deductions.
Appellate Practice: The firm also handles appeals, taking cases to higher courts when necessary to challenge unfavorable rulings and establish important legal precedents.
Himmelstein Gribben & Joseph LLP offers several compelling features and highlights that make them a significant and impactful legal resource for New Yorkers, particularly those in vulnerable situations.
Dedicated Advocacy for the Vulnerable: A primary highlight is the firm's unwavering commitment to advocating for individuals in challenging circumstances, such as tenants facing difficult landlords or those experiencing police misconduct. As one review demonstrates, they are willing to help "small fry" clients, dispelling the feeling of being "just another case number."
Specialized Expertise in Tenant Rights: In a city with complex housing laws, their deep specialization in tenant rights, including rent stabilization, habitability issues, and lease termination, is invaluable. The client testimonial about quickly resolving a difficult landlord issue after a single consultation with Mr. Gribben exemplifies this effectiveness.
"No Nonsense Advice": Clients appreciate receiving direct, practical, and effective advice. The term "no nonsense advice" suggests clarity and a focus on actionable solutions, which is particularly helpful when navigating stressful legal situations.
Impactful Results from Initial Consultations: The fact that a significant landlord dispute began to resolve immediately after mentioning contact with the lawyer, all within a single consultation, speaks volumes about the firm's reputation and the potency of their initial guidance. This rapid impact saves clients time, money, and anxiety.
Strong Reputation in Civil Rights and Police Misconduct: While not directly from the provided reviews, the firm is widely recognized in New York for its robust civil rights practice, particularly in cases involving police misconduct. This reputation underscores their commitment to justice and accountability for government entities.
Strategic Downtown NYC Location: Situated on Maiden Lane in the Financial District, the firm is centrally located and easily accessible via numerous subway lines, making it convenient for clients from all boroughs to seek legal assistance.
As a highly specialized and impactful law firm dedicated to tenant rights, civil rights, and employment law, Himmelstein Gribben & Joseph LLP does not typically offer "promotions" or "special offers" in the retail sense. Their value proposition is built upon their deep legal expertise, their unwavering commitment to justice for their clients, and their established track record of achieving favorable outcomes in complex and often sensitive cases.
Legal services, particularly in the areas they practice, are highly individualized. Fees are generally discussed and agreed upon during the initial consultation, taking into account the complexity of the case, the time and resources required, and the specific legal strategy involved. However, it is common practice for firms specializing in tenant rights and civil rights to offer initial consultations, which can be crucial for individuals to understand their rights and legal options without an immediate financial commitment. As demonstrated by the client review where Mr. Gribben provided valuable tips and advice within a single consultation that led to a resolution, the initial discussion itself can be incredibly beneficial.
Interested individuals are encouraged to contact the firm directly to inquire about their consultation policy and fee structure. The true "offer" lies in the firm's dedication to fighting for fair treatment and protecting the rights of New Yorkers, providing a powerful legal voice for those in vulnerable situations.

May 31, 2025 · E JI lived in a tent stabilized building and was dealing with a landlord who was constantly cutting corners on things like heat. There was also a rowdy neighbor living above. After it became clear over a course of months that the problems weren't going to be permanently resolved, I attempted to terminate my lease, but even that was difficult. I contacted Mr Gribben who gave me some no nonsense advice. My landlord immediately began to take me seriously after I mentioned having contacted a lawyer and offered me an offer to terminate the deal. Mr Gribben offered me some tips to make it better and save me some money. All this happened within a single consultation. I've been renting in NYC for 20 years and have never had to enlist a lawyer and like to be on good terms with my landlord, but this time, this wasn't a possibility and Mr. Gribben was there to help. I know they have some clients who pay more rent than I do and have a lot more money, so I appreciated that they helped a small fry like myself.
Nov 19, 2024 · Anna PilipienkoExtremely cold, brutally indifferent to severe harassment claims done by landlords. We luckily talked with other lawyers that were incredibly sympathetic to our plight. William Gribben implied that our harassment was not a tenant rights problem. He talked down to us every step of the way, did not give us a shred of empathy, and even accused us of just wanting to become millionaires. It was cruel to say "The harassment doesn't interest me, but the rent stabilization does." It was also horrendously cruel to not tell us ahead of time about these things before the Skype call. We left that meeting feeling more traumatized than we began. I strongly recommend finding a law firm that works with the peasant class and will give you warmth in your troubling time dealing with abusive, illegal behavior from landlords.
Mar 04, 2025 · Michael DawsonMy only regret is not reaching out to Himmelstein McConnell Gribben & Joseph LLP sooner. I faced a challenging legal situation, and my attorney, Milad Momeni, was incredibly helpful, providing peace of mind from the very beginning. He patiently listened to my concerns, skillfully guided me through the entire process, and achieved a very favorable outcome. As others have mentioned, their rates are reasonable, and their billing is transparent. I highly recommend Milad Momeni and the team at Himmelstein McConnell Gribben & Joseph LLP.
Dec 04, 2024 · Claudia HaaseWe worked with Jesse Gribben after we discovered our landlord was charging us an illegal amount in a rent-stabilized building. Jesse was available almost every time we needed him, was reassuring, and took our concerns very seriously. In the end, we received a settlement that was acceptable to both parties. If you are a tenant who needs assistance with a less than scrupulous landlord, you must go with Himmelstein, McConnell, Gribben etc. No one looks out for you the same.
