My experience with Avila was shockingly bad. I will not disclose the private details of my family's situation, but I hired her to handle several post-divorce issues at five hundred fifty an hour after connecting to her through SM County Bar Lawyer Referral Service, and worked with her for about 8 months before the hearing. Here are the issues potential and current clients should know: * Avila did not document or remember (but charged for) our multiple attorney-client calls. My client file contained nothing on these key strategy and background conversations, and her response to my fee mediation request further proves that she treats phone calls as very lucrative ephemera. * She called me DURING the hearing to clarify extremely basic elements of the case as if it were the first time she'd seen it, and her conduct was erratic for the duration. * Avila did not look at a single key email in prep for hearing, but decided to wing it. My former spouse steamrolled her during meet-and-confer (which she didn't prepare either of us for), and the judge was visibly irritated with her during the entire open hearing. * Avila completely neglected to address one of the three major issues for which I retained her (which we discussed multiple times, including the day before). That failure alone will cost me 5 figures over 2 years. * Every document her office produced required 2-5 corrections (from major mistakes to typos), and she charges attorney rates for everything. You will have to act as her legal assistant and she will charge you for the pleasure. * While your attorney is not a therapist, avoid her like the plague if you have experienced any form of abuse in connection to your case. Not a great warning to give against a family law attorney. I assumed that an attorney with significant experience in San Mateo County family law and no publicly-visible Bar sanctions (complaints, settlements, fee mediations are not visible to us) would have been able to keep track of the handful of issues in my case. I assumed that she would prepare me competently for the non-attorney, pre-hearing FCS mediation. I assumed she would have known what to expect at the hearing itself. I assumed she would have refreshed her memory on the case by reviewing my client file before the hearing started (and that she would have maintained a sufficient file in the first place). I assumed that she would represent me as agreed rather than deciding to improv her way through the hearing. I was wrong on all counts. Clients have some recourse through county and state bar and can also file suit to recoup in the case of malpractice. However, all of these cost us money, time, energy, and require business-hours attendance at hearings. A well-connected professional attorney will always be at a significant advantage in those venues. Just staggeringly unprofessional and unprepared. Retaining Avila was a financially, mentally, and emotionally devastating mistake, and she could not care less.

However, it is important to provide an objective introduction based on all available information, including client reviews. Several public reviews provide critical feedback regarding services received. One detailed account from a client who connected with her through the San Mateo County Bar Lawyer Referral Service described a "shockingly bad" experience, citing issues such as:
Lack of documentation or memory of attorney-client calls, despite being charged for them.
Unpreparedness for hearings, including calling the client during the hearing for basic clarifications and not reviewing key emails or preparing for meet-and-confer sessions.
Failure to address one of the three major issues for which the client was retained, leading to significant financial loss for the client.
Numerous corrections required for documents produced by her office, with attorney rates charged for these corrections, implying clients had to act as a "legal assistant."
A warning for clients with abuse experience in their case to "avoid her like the plague," suggesting a lack of sensitivity or appropriate handling of such delicate situations.
Another review echoes concerns about strategy and financial implications, stating that her "strategy turned out to be completely off the mark and cost me hundreds of thousands in legal fees." This review also mentions that Eileen Avila announced midway through a case that she would no longer handle contested or conflict divorces and dropped the case at the last minute, forcing the client to hire another firm. This reviewer suggested her practice might be suitable only for "divorce paperwork" or "mail some letters" and advised against hiring her for cases where winning is the objective. Concerns about "price gouging" and recommending fee arbitration were also raised, with the implication that her focus was on a "retirement money grab."
These reviews, while representing individual experiences, highlight potential areas of concern regarding case management, client communication, preparation, and professional conduct. For local users on "Lawyers Near Me," it is essential to consider both the advertised specializations and the real-world feedback when making a decision about legal representation. The comprehensive nature of her family law services, certified specialization, and extensive experience are balanced by the strong negative feedback concerning the quality of service, particularly in complex or contested cases, and aspects of billing and client communication.
In conclusion, the Law Offices of Eileen Avila presents a certified family law specialist with a long history in the field and a wide array of services catering to family law needs in the Bay Area. She offers an initial free consultation and is accessible via phone and email. However, potential clients should be aware of the serious concerns raised in client reviews regarding case preparedness, communication, the handling of complex issues, and fee practices. These elements are crucial for local users to weigh when seeking legal counsel on the "Lawyers Near Me" platform to ensure their specific needs and expectations can be met.

Mar 25, 2025 · Christine KramerEileen completely bumbled my case, her “strategy” turned out to be completely off the mark and cost me hundreds of thousands in legal fees. I believe she’s retired or about to retire, midway through my case she announced that she’s not handling contested or conflict divorces anymore and dropped my case at the last minute forcing me to hire another firm. Perhaps she could help you with divorce paperwork, mail some letters but I sure wouldn’t recommend her if your trying to win anything. As far as price gouging she has no shame so plan on going to fee arbitration after she loses your case for you. She’s on a retirement money grab, I funded her last trip to Europe for losing my case, what a business!
