I rarely leave reviews, but I feel compelled to share my experience with this law firm in hopes of helping others avoid the same frustration. I retained Ms. Charsalyn Mitchell to represent me in a sensitive custody matter, and unfortunately, the service I received was far below the standard of competent legal representation. Please keep in mind I am the petitioner in this case. From the very beginning, there were multiple issues: lack of communication, disorganization, and an overall lack of preparation that directly impacted my case. Ms. Mitchell routinely missed deadlines, failed to follow through on basic tasks like serving paperwork, and left me to represent myself in court after she declined to appear for a hearing, despite knowing I had been served with paperwork. She informed me I had to request a continuance on my own, which was incredibly overwhelming and unprofessional on her part. The other option was to represent myself and give the judge my evidence. I was not informed on the proper way to even give my evidence. Throughout the case, she often contradicted her own advice, appeared unfamiliar with the details of my situation, and ignored urgent matters that prevented me from seeing my child during the holidays. It was clear she had not reviewed the materials she asked me to send, and when I finally saw the petition she filed on my behalf, it was missing crucial information we had discussed. During our final court appearance, she arrived late, was unaware of what the opposing counsel had already presented to the judge, and I had to retrieve her from another room just to get her to enter the courtroom. She appeared disengaged, unprepared, and uninterested in advocating on my behalf. I felt pressured to accept unfavorable terms and later discovered discrepancies in the documentation, which she never acknowledged or addressed. Following this, I terminated her services. Since then, I have retained a new attorney whose professionalism and responsiveness have been a complete 180 from my prior experience. I now have access to a secure portal, regular updates, and proactive representation, everything I expected and deserved from the start. To make matters worse, I have reached out to the law firm multiple times about these concerns to handle in house, yet I keep getting informed Victoria Weaver will reach out to me but she has not. I originally filed my complaint over a month ago. I have since learned that Ms. Mitchell has a public disciplinary record, which is deeply troubling in hindsight. What should have been a straightforward legal process turned into months of stress, delays, and financial burden, all caused by negligence and lack of care. I cannot recommend this firm, and I strongly advise others to do their research before choosing representation. STAY FAR AWAY!!!

Operating within the "Lawyers Near Me" category, the firm primarily focuses on family law, serving clients across Dallas-Fort Worth, including Irving, Plano, Arlington, and Tarrant County. With phone contacts at (972) 853-4159 and mobile phone +1 972-853-4159, Marx, Altman & Johnson positions itself as a resource for individuals navigating various family legal matters.
The firm emphasizes its dedication to divorce and family law exclusively, aiming to assist clients through what can be a challenging legal process. Their stated goal is to achieve agreeable solutions as quickly and painlessly as possible, offering a high level of representation and experience without charging what they describe as premium fees. They claim to offer affordable flat fees, starting as low as $495 for agreed cases with attorney representation, and mention the availability of payment plans. They also note that they do not charge for phone calls, postage, copy, or courier fees, differentiating themselves from firms that might bill in 15-minute increments for communication.
Marx, Altman & Johnson has been in practice since 1992, with its attorneys collectively possessing over 100 combined years of experience in family law. The firm's website indicates that they have resolved over 10,000 cases. Their areas of practice include:
The firm offers free initial consultations to discuss individual situations. They aim to provide realistic expectations regarding timelines and processes. The website highlights that cases are assigned to attorneys who handle only divorce and family law cases, suggesting a specialized approach.
Client experiences with Marx, Altman & Johnson present a varied picture. One positive review highlights the firm's affordability and efficiency: "Best attorney's for standard price. You know ahead what you are getting into instead of other places where you have to sell everything off to pay for their worthless service. These guys won't rip you off...." Other positive testimonials found online mention the firm's ability to "get the job done," make the divorce process "simple and affordable," and provide knowledgeable and understanding legal counsel, especially in contested situations. One client specifically praised an attorney for fighting for their rights and making them feel heard in court, even when skepticism was initially present.
However, a detailed and critical review provides a contrasting perspective on services rendered by a specific attorney, Ms. Charsalyn Mitchell, within the firm. This client, involved in a sensitive custody matter, reported significant issues including a "lack of communication, disorganization, and an overall lack of preparation." Specific allegations include Ms. Mitchell routinely missing deadlines, failing to serve paperwork, and declining to appear for a court hearing, leaving the client to request a continuance or represent themselves without proper guidance. The client stated that Ms. Mitchell "often contradicted her own advice, appeared unfamiliar with the details of my situation, and ignored urgent matters that prevented me from seeing my child during the holidays." Furthermore, the client asserted that crucial information was missing from the petition filed on their behalf, and during the final court appearance, Ms. Mitchell allegedly arrived late, was unaware of opposing counsel's presentations, and appeared "disengaged, unprepared, and uninterested in advocating." This client ultimately terminated services and noted that they later discovered Ms. Mitchell has a public disciplinary record. They also expressed frustration with the firm's internal handling of their complaint, stating that attempts to reach Victoria Weaver about these concerns were unsuccessful for over a month. This review concludes with a strong recommendation for others to "STAY FAR AWAY!!!" and conduct thorough research before retaining representation.
The firm's website states that its lawyers, including Roderick D. Marx, Richard D. Johnson, and Victoria Weaver, are dedicated to their family law practice. Roderick Marx, the founder, has been practicing since 1992 and is highlighted for his efforts to provide affordable quality legal care. Richard Johnson, with the firm since 2001, is described as a trial attorney who strives for the best possible outcome for his clients. Victoria Weaver is also listed as a family law attorney.
Given the conflicting nature of the reviews, potential clients considering Marx, Altman & Johnson should undertake their own thorough due diligence. While the firm promotes itself on affordability, extensive experience, and specialization in family law, the severe negative feedback concerning a specific attorney highlights the importance of inquiring about the specific lawyer who will handle a case, their individual track record, and the firm's internal communication and client support protocols. The firm's physical office environment is not explicitly detailed in publicly available information, but its presence at 5605 N MacArthur Blvd #1000-1092, Irving, TX 75038, USA, indicates a professional office setting typical for a law firm in a commercial building.
