Tom did a great job on my case. He was professional, knowledgeable, and honest. The best family lawyer I've had, and I've been through quite a few -- unfortunately. My case lasted 18 months and wasn't hugely complicated or as contentious as it could have been but it wasn't a walk in the park either. Tom was aggressive when necessary but always reasonable and a gentleman throughout. I feel that his representation was a huge advantage for me. Highly recommended.

The review indicates that attorney Tom's representation was advantageous for the client during a "separation" that, while not "hugely complicated or as contentious as it could have been," still required professional guidance over an 18-month period. This suggests experience in navigating family law disputes with a balance of assertiveness and reasonableness.

Based on the provided client reviews, several features and highlights can be attributed to Miller Thomas, specifically attorney Tom (Thomas P. Miller). It's important to present both the positive and cautionary aspects to provide a complete picture for potential clients in Illinois:

Positive Highlights:

  • Professionalism and Knowledge: One client describes Tom as "professional, knowledgeable, and honest," indicating a strong grasp of legal principles and a commitment to ethical practice.
  • Effective Advocacy: The review notes that Tom was "aggressive when necessary but always reasonable and a gentleman throughout," suggesting a balanced approach to representation that prioritizes client advantage while maintaining decorum. The client explicitly states that his representation "was a huge advantage for me."
  • Client Satisfaction in Family Law: The client highly recommends him as "the best family lawyer I've had," despite having "been through quite a few," indicating a high level of satisfaction with his performance in a family law context over an 18-month case.
  • Strategic Guidance: His ability to guide the client "on the right path to getting through this separation on my terms" demonstrates effective strategic advice and leadership during a challenging personal situation.

Important Considerations (Based on a Cautionary Review):

  • Billing Accuracy and Transparency Concerns: One review raises serious concerns about being "charged more than our contract agreed rate," with the overcharging being "undeniably confirmed" after a complaint was filed. This highlights the critical importance of scrutinizing billing.
  • Recommendation for Neutral Escrow: The suggestion to "Put the retainer in a neutral escrow account" so that funds are not earned until satisfaction is confirmed, implies a perceived risk regarding billing practices and dispute resolution.
  • Engagement Agreement Review: The strong recommendation to "DO NOT sign it until you have an attorney not affiliated with Krueger & Miller advise you on what ALL reasonable terms and conditions you should agree to" points to a need for external review of contractual terms to protect client interests.
  • Importance of Written Agreements and Timelines: The advice to ensure "Whatever Mr. Miller says he is going to do for you make sure it is in writing, and there are timelines attached" indicates a need for clear, documented commitments for services.
  • Prompt Bill Review: The caution to "Promptly review your bill for accuracy, and make sure you agree with it. If you don’t, immediately dispute it in writing" emphasizes the necessity of active client oversight on financial matters.

Potential clients in Illinois should weigh both the strong positive recommendation regarding legal performance in family law against the serious financial and contractual cautions raised in the second review. Due diligence, including detailed discussions about billing practices and contract terms, is highly advisable.

Information regarding specific public promotions or special offers from Miller Thomas is not provided. As with many legal professionals, direct promotions in the retail sense are uncommon. However, potential clients often inquire about initial consultations, which can sometimes be offered as a complimentary or reduced-fee service. An initial consultation provides an opportunity for prospective clients to discuss their legal matter, receive preliminary advice, and understand the attorney's approach and fee structure before committing to full legal representation.

Given the cautionary advice in one of the reviews regarding billing and contracts, it is particularly important for potential clients to have a very clear and detailed discussion about all fees, payment plans, retainer usage, and the terms of the engagement agreement during any initial consultation. It is highly recommended to clarify every aspect of the financial arrangement in writing before proceeding with services. Transparency in fees and processes is vital for building trust and ensuring a positive client experience.

When contacting the office, it's beneficial to have a concise summary of your legal situation prepared. This will assist them in understanding your needs. Given the feedback, it would also be prudent to prepare specific questions regarding billing, engagement terms, and communication protocols. Whether you choose to initiate contact via phone or plan a visit to their Wheaton office, these details provide a direct line to their legal services.

For residents across Illinois, especially those in Wheaton and surrounding DuPage County, Miller Thomas, represented by attorney Tom (Thomas P. Miller), offers legal services primarily in family law. Based on one highly positive review, attorney Tom is described as professional, knowledgeable, honest, and highly effective, providing a "huge advantage" to his client in a family law case.

However, it is crucial for local users to also consider the serious cautionary feedback regarding billing practices and engagement agreements. While the positive review highlights strong legal performance and strategic guidance, the negative review underscores the critical importance of due diligence in contractual and financial matters. For any Illinois resident contemplating hiring Miller Thomas, it is strongly advised to meticulously review all contractual terms, ensure all promises are in writing with timelines, and diligently monitor billing for accuracy. Seeking independent legal advice on the engagement agreement from an unaffiliated attorney, as suggested by one reviewer, could be a prudent step.

Ultimately, the suitability of Miller Thomas for locals in Illinois will depend on their specific legal needs and their comfort level with diligently managing the contractual and financial aspects of their legal representation. Their expertise in family law, as praised by one client, could be beneficial, but prospective clients should proceed with thorough caution and clear communication regarding all terms of service.

Mr. Thomas P. Miller charged me more than our contract agreed rate during his representation of me, and I did not find out about it until after I filed a complaint against him in regards to other matters; thereafter, the overcharging was undeniably confirmed. I also have other issues in regards to Mr. Miller, but I will simply state if you are going to hire him to represent you which I very, very strongly recommend you do not do-NO MATTER HOW AFFORDABLE THE PAYMENT PLAN HE WORKS OUT WITH YOU IS. Please do the following: Put the retainer in a neutral escrow account. You can do an online search, and you will find several neutral escrow account service providers, so that Mr. Miller cannot claim he earned the funds until you are satisfied that he actually earned it. Otherwise, a neutral arbitrator will get involved. Whatever engagement agreement that Mr. Miller asks you to sign DO NOT sign it until you have an attorney not affiliated with Krueger & Miller advise you on what ALL reasonable terms and conditions you should agree to. Whatever Mr. Miller says he is going to do for you make sure it is in writing, and there are timelines attached. Promptly review your bill for accuracy, and make sure you agree with it. If you don’t, immediately dispute it in writing.
