I went to this office seeking legal advice. The attorney I spoke with could easily see the charges brought against me were bogus and would be throw out of court. The attorney informed me of this and advised me to not even hire him as it’d be a waste of my money and to reconnect with him if I needed his help after all. He was exactly right. My case was thrown out and now my best way to thank the firm is a good review. 5/5 would use again, very trustworthy attorney!

Nichols and Tucker, P.A., is primarily known for its focus on criminal defense and personal injury cases. The firm explicitly highlights its expertise in OUI (Operating Under the Influence) / DUI defense, a challenging and critical area of law in Maine. This specialization suggests a deep understanding of Maine's complex OUI laws, including potential long-term impacts on individuals. Beyond OUI, their criminal defense practice extends to various other criminal charges. In the realm of personal injury, the firm represents individuals who have suffered harm due to the negligence or wrongful conduct of others, encompassing a range of incidents from auto accidents to slip and falls.
Attorney Matthew Nichols is a key figure at the firm, often highlighted for his extensive experience and reputation as a leading criminal and drunk driving defender in Maine. His background, reportedly extending over 28 years in practice, includes successfully defending thousands of drunk driving cases and handling major criminal charges, including homicide. He is described as a "fearless and dedicated criminal defense lawyer" who fights to protect clients' fundamental rights. This suggests a firm that is prepared to take cases to trial when necessary and is well-versed in navigating the Maine legal system and interacting with prosecutors.
The client reviews provided offer contrasting perspectives, which is crucial for an objective introduction. One highly positive review states: "I went to this office seeking legal advice. 5/5 would use again, very trustworthy attorney!" This testimonial highlights a significant feature: the firm's honesty and integrity. The attorney’s advice to not hire him, to save the client money, speaks volumes about their ethical approach and client-first mentality, earning trust through transparent and beneficial guidance. This kind of interaction fosters strong client loyalty and word-of-mouth referrals.
However, another review presents a very different experience: "Don't waste your time calling thus firm for anything. Denied representation without even a consultation for the offense of OUI .. Found another law firm and have the funds to hire anyone. Attorney Tucker never even spoke with me and had his legal assistant tell me they are not interested in representing me. But no legitimate reason why .... I'll be filing a complaint against this attorney with the Maine Bureau of Overseeors soon." This negative review raises concerns about the firm's intake process and communication. Denying representation, especially for an OUI offense which is a stated area of expertise, without a direct consultation or a clear reason, can be frustrating and perceived as unprofessional by potential clients. The mention of "Attorney Tucker" suggests that other attorneys within the firm also interact with potential clients, and this specific experience points to a breakdown in communication or an internal policy that led to a negative perception. The intent to file a complaint further indicates severe dissatisfaction. It is important for prospective clients to be aware of this variability in reported client experiences, as it underscores the importance of an initial consultation to assess compatibility and communication style.
Promotional information for Nichols and Tucker, P.A., largely revolves around their proven track record, particularly in OUI defense, and the experience of their lead attorneys. Testimonials like the first one serve as powerful endorsements, showcasing their ethical practice and successful outcomes. The firm's website and other online presences often feature sample case results for OUI and criminal defense, highlighting "Not Guilty" verdicts and favorable plea agreements, which act as strong promotional material. They also emphasize their dedication to protecting clients' rights and their extensive knowledge of Maine's legal system, including knowing "the prosecutors and their methods." This strategic positioning aims to instill confidence in potential clients that they are choosing a firm with the expertise and tenacity to achieve desired results. The provision of free case reviews or initial consultations is also a common promotional strategy employed by such firms to attract new clients and allow for a preliminary assessment of their case.
For local users searching on a "Lawyers Near Me" platform, Nichols and Tucker, P.A., in Portland, ME, would appear as a prominent option, particularly for criminal defense (including OUI/DUI) and personal injury cases. The firm's central location on Forest Avenue makes it accessible. While the positive review highlights trustworthiness and effective advice, the negative review points to potential issues in initial client engagement and communication that prospective clients should be mindful of. It is advisable for individuals to contact the firm directly, utilize any offered initial consultations, and consider their own comfort level with the firm's communication style and intake process to ensure it aligns with their expectations for legal representation in a critical matter.

Jul 30, 2024 · Brian DunniganNobody wants to find themselves in a position where there need a defense attorney. I'm grateful that I went with Matt Nichols. Throughout the whole process, he was always available to answer questions and provide clarification. It's heartening to see that, even after years of experience, he can see the person and not just the client. Overall, the experience seemed very organized, structured, and seamless. In the end, we got the best results possible. Nobody could have done better, and I believe very few could have done as well for me as he did. Thank you, Matt!

Mar 04, 2023 · Dan MerhalskiMatt and Joanne were very helpful in dealing with my first time OUI Charge. My case was complicated by living out of Maine, Matt was able to answer all of my questions thoroughly about Maine and many of the questions I had about my home state. An OUI Charge is very complicated, you need someone knowledgeable on your side and this firm is just that. I will never find myself in this embarrassing situation again, but would not hesitate to contact Matt Nichols if I were.
