In the past they've been amazing. I'm not sure what has changed. I feel more than disappointed in having had my hopes brought way up just to have my case for help closed before I was ever even represented. I was told the lawyer would represent me, then told in January they'd have time, now in January they just are going to vanish. I haven't even been to court yet and the case is for the best interest of my child. If they offer to represent you don't be surprised if they do little more than talk on the phone and send you off without actually representing you. I give two stars because in the past they were amazing but I don't see any reason to ever ask them for help again after this. Vulnerable low income people don't need false hope they need straight forward honesty. I could have been seeking help for over an month but was told I'd be represented.

Pine Tree Legal Assistance Inc. Introduce

For local users seeking vital legal assistance, especially those with limited financial means, the "Lawyers Near Me" platform often directs them to non-profit organizations dedicated to access to justice. Pine Tree Legal Assistance Inc. (PTLA), situated in Portland, Maine, is one such organization, aiming to provide free civil legal services to low-income individuals throughout the state. This introduction will objectively present information about PTLA, including its stated mission, services, and features, while also incorporating recent client feedback to offer a comprehensive and balanced perspective.

Pine Tree Legal Assistance Inc. is located at 88 Federal St, Portland, ME 04101, USA. This central location in Portland aims to serve as a hub for their operations in the state's largest city. For contact, individuals can reach PTLA by phone at (207) 774-8211, with a mobile phone alternative at +1 207-774-8211. As a non-profit legal aid organization, the physical environment of their offices, while not explicitly described in the reviews, is typically designed to be functional and accessible to clients from diverse backgrounds. Their primary focus is on delivering services rather than opulent surroundings, ensuring that resources are directed towards legal aid. PTLA operates six field offices across Maine, in Portland, Lewiston, Augusta, Bangor, Machias, and Presque Isle, indicating a broad reach to serve residents statewide.

The core services provided by Pine Tree Legal Assistance Inc. revolve around offering free civil legal assistance to low-income individuals and families. PTLA was founded in 1966 and is the oldest and largest legal aid organization in Maine. Their mission is to ensure that state and federal laws affecting poor people are upheld, while also addressing systemic barriers to justice. They prioritize civil legal cases that can make a difference in one's ability to meet basic human needs or enforce basic human rights, including access to housing, food, income, safety, education, and healthcare. Specific areas of focus include:

  • Preservation of housing and related housing needs (e.g., preventing evictions and foreclosures, enforcing safe housing and anti-discrimination laws).
  • Maintaining, enhancing, and protecting income and economic stability (e.g., issues with welfare benefits like TANF, Food Supplements, General Assistance, IRS tax problems).
  • Promoting safety, health, and well-being (e.g., domestic violence, sexual assault, access to healthcare).
  • Improving outcomes for Maine children and youth, including their specialized Kids Legal unit.
  • Enforcing workplace opportunities, income, and legal protections for low-wage workers.
  • Addressing the legal needs of specific vulnerable populations, such as veterans, indigenous people, and individuals with disabilities.
It is important to note that PTLA does not handle criminal cases or traffic violations. They also offer various forms of assistance, including full legal representation, brief advice, client education, and self-help resources, including a free online self-help legal website.

A key feature of Pine Tree Legal Assistance Inc. is its dedication to serving the most vulnerable populations in Maine. Their eligibility criteria are primarily based on income, generally serving individuals and families whose household annual adjusted gross income is at or below 125% of the federal poverty guidelines, though some programs allow for higher incomes. Historically, PTLA has been praised for its commitment and effectiveness. One past client noted, "In the past they've been amazing," highlighting their historical success in providing critical legal support. Their long history of advocating for improved housing codes, accessibility for people with disabilities, and protections for domestic violence survivors underscores their impactful work in systemic change.

However, recent client reviews present a more challenging picture concerning certain aspects of their operations and client experience. One review highlights a significant issue with communication and follow-through, stating that hopes were "brought way up just to have my case for help closed before I was ever even represented." This client was "told the lawyer would represent me, then told in January they'd have time, now in January they just are going to vanish," leading to deep disappointment, particularly for a case concerning "the best interest of my child." The reviewer advises that if PTLA offers representation, one should "don't be surprised if they do little more than talk on the phone and send you off without actually representing you." This suggests a potential gap between initial promises and actual case handling, causing distress for vulnerable individuals seeking urgent legal help.

Another critical feature, or rather, a concern, raised by client feedback pertains to accessibility and responsiveness. A reviewer reported extreme difficulty reaching the office during stated call hours: "Call hours are listed for 9-11 am for Thursday. I have been calling since 9, have called every ten minutes, right up until 11, phone doesn't even ring, just says line is busy, and hangs up on me." This direct experience suggests a significant challenge in initial client intake and access, which can be particularly frustrating and disheartening for individuals in crisis. The client's strong negative reaction, stating, "Absolutely disgraceful and disappointing," underscores the impact of such communication barriers on those desperately needing assistance. It also points to systemic issues in handling a high volume of calls with limited resources.

From a promotional standpoint, PTLA's mission and historical impact are powerful. Their long-standing commitment to social justice, their comprehensive range of civil legal services for low-income Mainers, and their positive track record in thousands of cases annually (over 7,500 cases in 2022) are strong promotional points. They are funded by various sources, including state grants and federal appropriations, allowing them to provide free services. Their development of online self-help resources and community legal education initiatives also expands their reach and impact, which are valuable features to highlight. The organization's focus on basic human needs like housing, income, and safety aligns with a critical societal need, making their services inherently promotable to those who qualify. However, the recent negative feedback regarding client communication and access poses a challenge to their overall promotional message. For the "Lawyers Near Me" platform, it's crucial to present these reviews to provide a realistic expectation for potential clients. While PTLA's mission is laudable and their services essential, managing client expectations regarding response times and case acceptance is key, especially given their limited resources compared to the high demand for free legal aid.

In conclusion, Pine Tree Legal Assistance Inc., located at 88 Federal St, Portland, ME, and reachable at (207) 774-8211, operates as a vital non-profit organization offering free civil legal services to low-income individuals in Maine. While historically praised for their amazing work in areas such as housing, domestic violence, and family law, recent client feedback points to significant challenges in accessibility, communication, and managing client expectations regarding case representation. Despite these concerns, PTLA's long-standing mission to uphold state and federal laws affecting poor people and address systemic barriers to justice remains central to its identity. Potential clients seeking assistance through the "Lawyers Near Me" platform should be aware of both the critical services offered and the reported difficulties in accessing timely and consistent representation, understanding that the high demand for free legal aid can lead to strained resources and operational challenges.

Call hours are listed for 9-11 am for Thursday. I have been calling since 9, have called every ten minutes, right up until 11, phone doesn't even ring, just says line is busy, and hangs up on me. In a day and age where we have multiple lines and the capability to put someone on hold, it just seems like a very convenient way to get out of doing work. Everyone I know has told me to call them for help, so I intend to call everyone I know and let them know about this and ask them to tell everyone they know. My family has been natives of Maine since the very first colonies, and the other side of my family are native Americans whose tribes have always been in Maine, we are related to a huge amount of the population of the state, and I can say with full confidence that Maine is getting worse and worse and no longer cares for its populace and this all today really brought it home for me. Absolutely disgraceful and disappointing.

If you’re looking for a firm that will put their interests ahead of yours, this is the firm for you. I’d recommend you beg, borrow, or steal to avoid any interaction with Pine Tree Legal. Your interests will not be represented but the lawyers interests in doing less work will be represented. Avoid at all costs

Only a 20 minute wait, and my representative Pedro was incredibly helpful.

Many people told me to call here for help and I was met with such rude angry energy for no reason. Whoever the person was working today must seriously hate her job. Disappointed that this is the place I always see people told they’ll get help if they’ll turn to. Definitely not my experience.
