My aunt and I recently had the good fortune of working with Steven Guerra. I can't overstate how grateful I am that we found our way to him. My aunt wanted to translate her will into a trust. She is also in her 80s and has some mobility issues and a general loathing of current technology (and who can blame her). She lives in a great NYC building staffed by people who love her and treat her like family, from the people at the door to the board. Then, there is the management company that processes the paperwork, not in a timely fashion, not in a clear fashion, and not with an evident interest in promptly answering your questions. Oh yes . . . that company. Without boring you to tears with the details, I will say only that they dragged out what should have been an easy process for months. Yes, many, many, many months-- months and minutae. It was like she was being punished for placing her co-op in a trust. I am not exaggerating. Despite the fact that he likely spent double his billed hours (again, not exaggerating), Mr. Guerra did not give up on us. He was equally awesome from start to finish. For instance, knowing that my aunt is mobility challenged, he took the train up from Brooklyn to initially meet with her in her home. He came back to her home to finalize the paperwork. In a spectacular example of decency and humanity, I needed a form from him on a Sunday morning. I left him a message, expecting him to call me back first thing Monday. He answered the phone. When I mentioned how I had not intended to disturb him on a Sunday, he said "I figured if you were calling it was important." Seriously, when is the last time you contacted a busy professional on a Sunday morning and they took that call? This kind of professionalism and, frankly, kindness and decency, has marked all of our interactions with this attorney. We are both extremely grateful to him. Some day, when he is in a jam and needs someone competent and kind, I hope the universe guides him to someone who will treat him the way he treated us. Please forgive me for the length of my review.
