Choosing one since I can not chose zero or a negative number. I had been with my husband for 32 years. We decided to divorce. I spoke with Robert a few times and liked his demeanor. I also liked that he practiced family law as well as estate planning since I more than likely would have to give my husband part of my fidelity 401k. Divorce is a very emotional process. I did not want to be a woman at my senior age, be alone, and worry about my retirement money. I had just retired and had no income. And I was scared about this process. I chose Robert to represent me. I paid him his retainer fee. He started the divorce process and filed with the court. My husband was served and the 30 days went by and he was in default. I contacted Robert to ask if he filed the default which would be in my favor. The default was not filed and my husband hired an attorney who contacted Robert. Robert called me and I thought it was good news that he was going to share that he filed the default. He told me that my husband hired an attorney and that he was no longer able to represent me. He wouldn’t have time to represent me. He could refer me to a colleague that would have more time. He didn’t explain anything to me. He didn’t tell me that I would have to pay another retainer fee. He didn’t tell me if I had anything left on his retainer. He didn’t even give me an opportunity to contact my husband to talk or work anything out. I was devastated and scared. I paid him to represent me. He abandoned me. He knew my circumstances and my vulnerability. He knew I had been the working one supporting the household for years and that my husband was taking advantage of me. I had shared with him that my husband became mean toward me and that I had discovered that he was/had been spending $240 a week on pot which was taking away from our household and our future. He was not a good husband. Robert didn’t file the default which he should have but he quickly filed a change of attorney with the court. It’s shameful that the attorney I hired to represent me did this. He shouldn’t advertise or accept clients that he can not provide family law services for. I would like to add that he never followed up with me. He was unprofessional and his actions show that he did not care about me as his client. I was left with the horrible things my husband did to me and then the horrible things my attorney did to me.

This setting is often preferred for discussing sensitive legal matters, ensuring discretion and client comfort. Furthermore, its proximity to courthouses, governmental offices, and other essential legal institutions in downtown San Diego can be advantageous for clients with ongoing legal proceedings, potentially facilitating quicker document filings and court appearances. Clavel Law, APLC, as indicated by client feedback, practices in key areas of law that are often interconnected, offering services that aim to address both immediate and long-term legal needs for individuals and families. Based on the provided information, the types of services commonly associated with a firm like Clavel Law, APLC include:

  • Family Law: This broad category includes handling matters such as divorce (dissolution of marriage), legal separation, child custody and visitation arrangements, child support, and spousal support (alimony). These services are crucial for individuals navigating life-changing family transitions.
  • Estate Planning: This involves assisting clients with preparing for the future by drafting essential documents like wills, trusts (e.g., living trusts, revocable trusts), durable powers of attorney for financial matters, and advance healthcare directives. The goal is to ensure assets are protected and distributed according to one's wishes, and medical decisions are honored.
  • Probate and Trust Administration: While not explicitly stated, firms involved in estate planning often assist with the legal process of administering an estate after a person's passing, including navigating probate court, validating wills, and distributing assets according to the will or trust terms.
  • Business Formation and General Business Law: One review mentions setting up a business, suggesting the firm may offer services related to the formation of business entities (e.g., LLCs, corporations), drafting operating agreements, and providing general legal advice for small businesses.
  • Contract Review and Drafting: This service typically involves assisting clients with creating, reviewing, and negotiating various contracts to protect their legal and financial interests.
  • General Legal Counsel: Offering advice and representation for other general legal issues that clients might encounter, providing a versatile legal resource.

Based on the provided customer reviews, it is essential to present a balanced view of the perceived features and highlights of Clavel Law, APLC, noting both positive initial impressions and significant concerns raised by clients:

  • Initial Professional Demeanor (Positive initial impression): One client initially "liked his demeanor," referring to Robert. This suggests that initial interactions can be professional and reassuring.
  • Practice Area Breadth (Intent): The firm advertises and accepts clients for family law and estate planning, indicating an intention to provide a range of services that often intersect, which can be convenient for clients with overlapping needs (e.g., divorce and 401k division).

However, the reviews contain significant concerns that must also be highlighted:

  • Lack of Responsiveness: A critical concern highlighted by both reviewers is a severe lack of responsiveness. Phrases like "so unresponsive to any attempt to contact them," "Sent numerous emails that were never responded to," and "was left waiting for a response for weeks on end" indicate a significant communication issue.
  • Client Abandonment/Withdrawal: One client reported that the attorney "told me that my husband hired an attorney and that he was no longer able to represent me... He abandoned me." This sudden withdrawal from a case, particularly when the client felt vulnerable, is a grave professional concern.
  • Failure to File Critical Documents: In the divorce case, the client alleges the default (which would have been in her favor) "was not filed," despite ample time, and instead, the attorney "quickly filed a change of attorney with the court." This points to potential negligence in handling case procedures.
  • Perceived Lack of Care/Professionalism: Clients felt that the attorney "did not care about me as his client" and that his actions were "unprofessional." The phrase "It’s shameful that the attorney I hired to represent me did this" strongly conveys a sense of betrayal.
  • Delays and Inefficiency: For the business setup, the client stated, "after waiting months for it to be completed handled it myself in a couple hours," indicating significant delays and inefficiency in delivering services.
  • Financial Concerns: The client in the divorce case was left without clarity on retainer balance and had to pay another retainer fee for a new attorney. Another client felt the "guy is only here to take your money and drag things out." These suggest issues with financial transparency and value for money.

In the legal industry, traditional "promotions" or "special offers" like those seen in retail are uncommon due to ethical guidelines and the personalized nature of legal services. However, law firms typically adhere to standards that may include:

  • Initial Consultation Policy: Many firms offer an initial consultation. This session allows prospective clients to discuss their legal needs and for the attorney to provide an initial assessment. The nature of this consultation (e.g., complimentary, flat fee) can vary. It is essential for potential clients to inquire about this when contacting the firm.
  • Discussion of Fee Structures: During any initial meeting, a professional legal firm will typically discuss their fee arrangements, whether it involves hourly rates, flat fees for specific services, or retainer agreements. Transparent communication about costs is a professional standard.

Given the specific feedback provided, potential clients should conduct thorough due diligence when considering engaging services. To learn more about Clavel Law, APLC, or to inquire about their services, you can use the following contact information:

While the firm is physically suitable due to its location, the provided client feedback indicates that the suitability of their service for locals requires careful personal assessment beyond just geographical convenience.

Stay away! Never worked with someone who is supposed to be a professional that was so unresponsive to any attempt to contact them. Paid this guy to set up a business and after waiting months for it to be completed handled it myself in a couple hours. Sent numerous emails that were never responded to and was left waiting for a response for weeks on end. This guy is only here to take your money and drag things out long enough that maybe you forget you even needed work from him. Watch out, this guy will take your money and waste your time. Go somewhere else.
