He wanted $1000 retainer just to meet him! Probably because I own a cannabis business but absolutely disgusting to be treated this way. When I questioned it then I was given the response that he no longer wants to meet with me because I said I was willing to pay hourly however I wasn’t sure I wanted to retain him until I met him because business contracts are such a Partnership when fighting these kinds of things. Would not recommend! Go to anyone else! Norman Hansen & Detroy have been phenomenal as well as Burnstein Shur. Happy to provide email screenshots

John W. Conway practices from an office situated at 83 Pleasant St, Auburn, ME 04210. This address places his practice within the city of Auburn, a notable community in Androscoggin County, Maine. This suggests he is part of an established legal practice, implying a professional and structured office environment. The local presence in Auburn makes the office convenient for residents seeking in-person legal advice and representation within their community.

Services Offered by Conway John W

While the provided client review touches on a specific client's experience with a cannabis business matter, public legal directories offer a broader understanding of John W. Conway's practice areas. He is noted for his expertise in:

  • Land Use Law: This involves legal issues related to the development and use of land, including zoning, permits, environmental regulations, and property development.
  • Real Estate: Handling various aspects of property law, such as transactions (buying, selling), disputes, and property rights.
  • Commercial Law: Providing legal counsel to businesses on matters like contracts, transactions, and corporate governance.
  • Municipal Law: Advising and representing local government entities or individuals dealing with local government regulations and disputes.
  • Litigation: Representing clients in civil legal disputes that may proceed to court.

Other practice areas potentially include Labor and Employment, Trusts and Estates, and Administrative Law. It's important to note that while the review mentions a "cannabis business," the firm's listed practice areas do not explicitly include cannabis law as a specialized field. However, business contracts and corporate transactions, which fall under Commercial Law and Business Law, could be relevant to a cannabis business, as could land use considerations for cultivation or retail locations.

Features of Conway John W

John W. Conway was admitted to the Maine Bar in 1990, and also to the U.S. District Court District of Maine in the same year, indicating a significant career span of over three decades in legal practice. He received his J.D. from the University of Maine in 1990 and a B.A. from the University of Vermont in 1987. Public ratings, such as a 4.5/5.0 peer review rating on Martindale.com, suggest that his professional competence is generally well-regarded by his peers. However, the provided client review highlights a specific and concerning aspect of his practice related to client intake and communication, which is important to consider:

  • Retainer Policy: The review states that he "wanted $1000 retainer just to meet him," which can be an unexpected requirement for an initial consultation, particularly if a client is still evaluating whether to retain the attorney. This policy, as described by the client, led to friction when the client expressed a willingness to pay hourly for a meeting but was hesitant to commit to a full retainer before understanding the partnership aspect of their legal fight.
  • Communication and Client Relations: The client's experience depicts a breakdown in communication and a lack of willingness to engage after the fee structure was questioned, leading to a negative perception: "he no longer wants to meet with me because I said I was willing to pay hourly... Would not recommend! Go to anyone else!" This feedback points to a rigid approach to client intake that may not align with all prospective clients' expectations, especially those who prefer an initial discussion before committing to a substantial retainer. While the review is a single perspective, it highlights a potential point of concern for future clients regarding initial engagement and flexibility.

This information should be viewed as one client's experience and may not reflect every interaction with John W. Conway or the firm Linnell, Choate & Webber.

Promotional Information and Client Accessibility

For local users searching on the "Lawyers Near Me" platform, John W. Conway's profile provides clear contact information: phone (207) 784-4563 and mobile (+1 207-784-4563), along with his physical address at 83 Pleasant St, Auburn, ME 04210, USA. His affiliation with Linnell, Choate & Webber, a known local firm, adds to his established presence. While there is no specific promotional material beyond basic contact information and practice areas, the client review serves as a direct, albeit negative, piece of public feedback. This review is a significant aspect of his public "promotional" information, as it directly impacts how potential clients might perceive his services and initial engagement policies. The client's strong recommendation to "Go to anyone else!" and mentioning other firms like "Norman Hansen & Detroy" and "Burnstein Shur" (both prominent Maine law firms) provides a comparative context for prospective clients. For those considering legal services in Auburn, particularly for business contracts or related commercial matters, it would be prudent to inquire about the firm's initial consultation policies and fee structures upfront to avoid similar misunderstandings. Despite the negative review on this specific interaction, John W. Conway remains a listed attorney on "Lawyers Near Me" in Auburn, offering services in real estate, land use, municipal, commercial law, and litigation, which are common legal needs in the community.
