RI Legal Services and Attorney Lucy West did what they could when my younger half sisters evicted me from a condo I shared with my 84 year old mother as her free caregiver.I gave up 12 years taking care of my grandmother, stepfather, and mother. There was little to do because of a trust which gave them power over both me and my mother. They were able to buy me some time to leave. The need for services is enormous. Non-profit legal aid offices typically prioritize creating a welcoming and accessible environment for individuals who may be facing vulnerable circumstances. The services offered by Rhode Island Legal Services Inc are geared towards providing legal assistance to low-income individuals who might otherwise be unable to afford legal representation. The client reviews provide some insight into the types of cases they handle, although the full scope of their services is not detailed. One review mentions Attorney Lucy West assisting a client who was being evicted from a shared condo by their half-sisters, despite having been a caregiver for their elderly mother. This suggests that Rhode Island Legal Services Inc may handle housing-related issues, including eviction cases, particularly when vulnerable individuals are involved. The review also notes the client's understanding that there was "little to do because of a trust," indicating that the organization may also provide advice and representation in matters involving trusts and estates, although the extent of their involvement may be limited by the specifics of the legal situation and the organization's resources.
Another, more complex review describes a situation involving a dispute over a mother's care and decision-making authority. The client recounts interactions with "Bob Sable" from Rhode Island Legal Services, alleging a negative initial reaction based on the client's appearance. The review also mentions subsequent attempts to seek assistance from other individuals at Rhode Island Legal Services regarding concerns about their mother's competency and promises made by their father. The involvement of multiple individuals within the organization (Lucy West, Bob Sable, Linda Parada) suggests that Rhode Island Legal Services Inc has a team of people who handle different aspects of legal aid. The mention of providing "some time to leave" in the first review indicates that their services can sometimes involve negotiating with opposing parties to achieve a resolution, even if a full legal victory is not possible.
Features of Rhode Island Legal Services Inc, as inferred from the reviews, appear to include:
The client reviews also highlight some challenges and important considerations when seeking assistance from Rhode Island Legal Services Inc. The first review mentions that "calling just isn't enough" and that the client had to go to the office and stay until they could be helped, indicating that in-person visits might be more effective than phone contact. The second review raises concerns about potential biases and the level of assistance provided in complex family and elder care situations. It suggests that the effectiveness of the services may vary depending on the specific attorney or staff member involved and the nature of the legal issue.
As a non-profit organization, Rhode Island Legal Services Inc likely operates with limited resources and prioritizes cases based on their mission and eligibility guidelines. Their services are a crucial resource for vulnerable individuals in the community who cannot afford private legal counsel. However, potential clients should be aware that the level and type of assistance provided may be subject to the organization's capacity and priorities.
For local users in Newport who believe they meet the eligibility criteria for low-income legal aid, Rhode Island Legal Services Inc at 50 Washington Square # 4 is a point of contact. The reviews suggest that while they strive to help those in need, the process may require persistence, such as visiting the office in person. The types of cases they handle appear to include housing matters and potentially some involvement in trusts and estates, although the extent of their services in these areas may vary. Individuals with complex legal issues, particularly involving family disputes and elder care, may find their experience and the level of assistance received can differ.
In conclusion, Rhode Island Legal Services Inc in Newport serves as a non-profit legal aid provider for low-income individuals. Located on Washington Square, they can be reached at (401) 846-2264. Based on client reviews, they appear to assist with housing issues like eviction and may offer some guidance in trust and estate matters. However, accessing their services may require in-person visits, and the level of assistance can vary. Potential clients should contact them directly to understand their eligibility criteria, the types of cases they currently handle, and the process for seeking their help. While they provide a vital service to the community, individuals should be prepared to explain their situation clearly and understand the potential limitations of a non-profit legal aid organization.

Feb 17, 2024 · william donovanZero. Anything you ask them they just defer to other agencies or other private attorneys. I've even asked simple questions about procedure that are answered on the State Judiciary websites and they can't answer. I don't know where they find these people. They've been getting paid to keep their doors shut and locked while we get the runaround trying to get thru the phone lines for our no-answers. Despicable.
